It is one of the universal<br />social institutions (Rao, 2008). In Chepang community levirate, sorrorate and cross-<br />cousin forms of marriages are found (Rijal, 1996). In levirate marriage a widow<br />marries with her husband’s brother whereas in sorrorate marriage a widower marries<br />with his wife’s sister. Early-age elopement (bhagi bibaah) is highly practiced and<br />arranged marriage (magi bibaah) is very rare. In bhagi bihaah both girl and boy agree<br />to marry after having several meeting.<br />Doing agricultural work (melaapaat), engaging in Parma labor exchange system and<br />going to mela (cultural program) provide opportunity to Chepangs (girl and boys) in<br />thickening their relationship and after that they finally enter into marriage<br />relationship. In this marriage, agreement of their parents is not necessary and parent<br />of both parties also accept the relationship but this marriage relation could not get<br />social recognition in the Chepang community. For social recognition of this marriage<br />bride’s parents have to call the groom to their house in future.<br />The invitation time extends up to ten years and time span is not the big issue. The<br />groom side goes to bride’s house after getting invitation from later parents’ side. The<br />groom side brings local liquor and eating items including fruits, breads (cell roti)<br />while going to bride house. The tradition is known as sagun lagne. The local liquor is<br />made up of millet grains and maize grown on Khoriya land. Only after that bhagi<br />bibaah gets social recognition and social value in Chepang community.

In their language Che means dogs<br /> and Pang means arrow (Manadhar, 2002), which reflects one of their traditional<br /> occupations-- hunting with the help of dogs, bows and arrows. They worship the bows<br /> and arrows used in hunting once a year (Ibid).<br /> Wild foods including roots crops, herbs and fruits are collected from the Chepang’s<br /> own land or from nearby jungle. Wild food such as ban tarul (Diascorea spp),<br /> githa/bhyakur (Doiscorea bulbifer), tyaguna, sisnu (Urtica dioca), tanki ko munta<br /> (Bahunea purpurea), niuro (Thlyopteris spp), Chiuri (bassia butyracea ), and wild<br /> mushroom are collected either from their own Khoriya or from nearby forest<br /> providing a large bulk of food for the households (Aryal, 2007). Wild foods like githa<br /> and vhyakur are linked with their traditional and cultural identification and they said<br /> that hami ta Chepangko jaat, gihta/vhyakur khaanchau (we are Chepangs thus we eat<br /> githa/vhyakur).

One of the respondents enquired for the<br /> research’s results and outputs at the time of acquiring household information. He also<br /> wanted to know that what he would get if he answered the questions that I asked him.<br /> According to him he did not benefit from the research, he had talked and answered in<br /> many times before with others who came from Kathmandu. He frankly said that<br /> answering the questions was only waste of time for him. I convinced him and gave<br /> some sticks of cigarette and he smoked. He also demanded for research’s importance<br /> and result. I answered his queries convincingly. Only after that he did agree on giving<br /> information to me. I addition, I felt discomforted when I went to nearby Chepang<br /> village. I was sitting on the wooden plank in the courtyard of the Chepang house. The<br /> head of the house was a primary school teacher. I informed him about my research<br /> purpose but he was unwilling to answer me. He also said that he was fed up by<br /> answering. After some minutes conversation (valakusari) he was finally ready to<br /> answer me. Later on he also served me a glass of buffalo milk.
