Nepal is a small, beautiful and patriarchal country and predominated by male in all major roles in the 
society. On the other hand, women have been treated as a factory of producing children and limited them 
only into household chore. Actually, they have no freedom in the society and education status of woman 
in Nepal is very low. Nepal is the poorest country and listed into third world country. In Nepal female have 
no access to education because of conservative social structure. For example, female should not be 
educated and keep them only in household activities. Moreover, some societies still wouldn’t see 
positively if girls go to school. As a result, woman has no accessibility to get any job such as government 
and private. As consequences, ultimately they should fully depend on their Woman Empowerment 
Program family and husband in terms of finance. By all above mentioned truth which is existed in our 
Nepali society would excite us to help them by giving some sort of non formal education and income 
generating as well as awareness building training related to women through volunteering service. We feel 
that providing education and training to them would increase their education level and uplift their living 
standard. In addition the concept of society would change gradually. Finally, they shouldn’t rely on their 
husband and woman in terms of money and can get freedom in family and society too.

Nepalese agricultural economy is being dominated by remittance in recent years. 
When the productive age Nepalese are going foreign countries for education and 
employment, chepangs have not stayed in exception. When I asked the villagers I 
found that two Chepangs have gone in Malaysia and one in India. 
Moving for overseas job is gearing up in Hamrung. In 2007, Kanchha Chepang went 
to Malaysia and lived there for three years now he is with his family in the village. 
One of my respondents, who is the president of local cooperative limited of the 
village said that Chepangs’ young are learning to go abroad for work. Many young 
Chepangs are willing to go outside for job. The cooperative was established in 2010 
with the objective to facilitating farmers especially in the vegetable production. By 
the means of vegetable farming and their work opportunities on overseas labor shows 
that Chepangs now are connected with national as well as global labor market.

 Marriage is a social institution of society which has different implications in different cultures that produce network and relationship in the society. It is one of the universal social institutions (Rao, 2008). In Chepang community levirate, sorrorate and cross- cousin forms of marriages are found (Rijal, 1996). In levirate marriage a widow marries with her husband’s brother whereas in sorrorate marriage a widower marries with his wife’s sister. Early-age elopement (bhagi bibaah) is highly practiced and arranged marriage (magi bibaah) is very rare. In bhagi bihaah both girl and boy agree to marry after having several meeting. Doing agricultural work (melaapaat), engaging in Parma labor exchange system and going to mela (cultural program) provide opportunity to Chepangs (girl and boys) in thickening their relationship and after that they finally enter into marriage relationship. In this marriage, agreement of their parents is not necessary and parent of both parties also accept the relationship but this marriage relation could not get social recognition in the Chepang community. For social recognition of this marriage bride’s parents have to call the groom to their house in future. The invitation time extends up to ten years and time span is not the big issue. The groom side goes to bride’s house after getting invitation from later parents’ side. The groom side brings local liquor and eating items including fruits, breads (cell roti) while going to bride house. The tradition is known as sagun lagne. The local liquor is made up of millet grains and maize grown on Khoriya land. Only after that bhagi bibaah gets social recognition and social value in Chepang community.

The village economy is subsistence oriented. The main occupation of Chepang is 
agriculture. They do both permanent and shifting agriculture. At the same time now 
they are inclined to cash vegetables for economic gains. The shifting cultivation is 
their major agricultural practice. They have very little paddy field (khet) on the blank 
of the Trishuli River, not to enough to support them. The Chepangs also do hunting, 
fishing (in Trisuli River), and collecting edible shoots and roots form Khoriya and 
nearby forests. They are well known as hunters and gatherers whose subsistence 
economy is based on forest resources. 
They are also known as Chyobang or Chewang. In their language Che means dogs 
and Pang means arrow (Manadhar, 2002), which reflects one of their traditional 
occupations-- hunting with the help of dogs, bows and arrows. They worship the bows 
and arrows used in hunting once a year (Ibid). 
Wild foods including roots crops, herbs and fruits are collected from the Chepang’s 
own land or from nearby jungle. Wild food such as ban tarul (Diascorea spp), 
githa/bhyakur (Doiscorea bulbifer), tyaguna, sisnu (Urtica dioca), tanki ko munta 
(Bahunea purpurea), niuro (Thlyopteris spp), Chiuri (bassia butyracea ), and wild 
mushroom are collected either from their own Khoriya or from nearby forest 
providing a large bulk of food for the households (Aryal, 2007). Wild foods like githa 
and vhyakur are linked with their traditional and cultural identification and they said 
that hami ta Chepangko jaat, gihta/vhyakur khaanchau (we are Chepangs thus we eat 
githa/vhyakur).

During the field stay, I had plenty of memorable experiences while acquiring 
information from the Chepangs. They are innocent and enthusiastic to learn. They are 
frank too. However, the researcher faced some difficulties in the course of garnering 
of information from the respondents. Few respondents would become skeptical and 
even reluctant to answer the questions. One of the respondents enquired for the 
research’s results and outputs at the time of acquiring household information. He also 
wanted to know that what he would get if he answered the questions that I asked him. 
According to him he did not benefit from the research, he had talked and answered in 
many times before with others who came from Kathmandu. He frankly said that 
answering the questions was only waste of time for him. I convinced him and gave 
some sticks of cigarette and he smoked. He also demanded for research’s importance 
and result. I answered his queries convincingly. Only after that he did agree on giving 
information to me. I addition, I felt discomforted when I went to nearby Chepang 
village. I was sitting on the wooden plank in the courtyard of the Chepang house. The 
head of the house was a primary school teacher. I informed him about my research 
purpose but he was unwilling to answer me. He also said that he was fed up by 
answering. After some minutes conversation (valakusari) he was finally ready to 
answer me. Later on he also served me a glass of buffalo milk.
